Sunday Starlinks

February 26th, 2012

Jake Kerr writes about the editorical process (and our collaboration developing the science) in his Nebula-award nominated story “The Old Equations.”  I’m going to write my side of things with expanded science for a post later this week.

There have been a number of reports already, but it’s likely the faster-than-light neutrinos aren’t.  Likely culprit: a loose cable.  Ugh.  It happens.  And when it does, science tracks it down.

The Telegraph thinks it is news that Richard Dawkins admits that God might exist.  Idiotic article.  Anyone who has read Dawkins already knows his very reasonable view.  He’s what is referred to my knowledgeable people as an “agnostic atheist.”  He sees no compelling evidence of an active God, and lives without belief in a god or gods, which is atheism.  He is agnostic in the sense that he’s not 100% absolutely sure that no god exists, something impossible to prove, and something no rational person would believe (this is different than denying specific claims by specific religions).  Dawkins is a skeptic and has intellectual integrity.  Not news, except to the ignorant who have a strawman version of Dawkins and other atheists.

A couple of Star Trek articles: Norman Spinrad’s lost TOS script, and some shots from the set of Star Trek 2.

Nomad planets may outnumber stars.  Space 1999 anyone?

And speaking of stars, an article from The Atlantic about getting there with Project Icarus.  Nice story about how it’s likely to happen without invoking unknown science.

Stephen Hawking frequents sex clubs.  Good for him!  I mean, he’s got a horrible disease that locks him up as a prisoner in his own body, plus he’s a celebrity who can’t go anywhere without an entourage, and at least he’s trying to enjoy himself in some ways that others might frown upon.

The ultimate T-Rex costume, which I will get to see in person this year at Dragon*Con!

And 15 Unusual Beds, including sleeping in the mouth a T Rex, and the Millenium Falcon.

The Subterrene Wars.  I’d like some unconventional viral marketing for my next book.

The Art of Carpe Chaos.  A kickstarter project.

Superman wasn’t, but we are.  Wyoming ready for Doomsday!  How about your state?

So the Wyoming Doomsday Plan is to print a stack of state currency, use it to purchase an aircraft carrier, and conscript a state military to run the ship… It seems implied that the task force is also drawing up a campaign to push the state boundaries westward until it captures an ocean port. This would make an awesome book!

Or a terrible book! It would take a skilled author…

Right. Better to make it into a movie. :D

Starring Richard Dreyfuss as Dick Cheney, Robert Duvall as Alan Simpson, and Harrison Ford as himself…
