Somehow I continue to be incredibly busy. I guess I am usually in this phase of the semester, but it’s been especially busy, and will stay that way for a while. I just wanted to make a quick post tonight about a few bits of news, personal and professional to share. I have a couple of longer, substantial posts I hope to finish writing and post later this week.
First, I wanted to remind interested parties that the Launch Pad Astronomy Workshop for Writers will be open for applications starting on March 1, through the end of the month. The dates are July 22-29, and Geoffrey Landis is our guest instructor. I don’t have any funding in hand for 2013, so there’s a chance this will be the last year for Launch Pad in Laramie as originally conceived and run for the last five years.
I’ve had to turn down a lot of applicants over the years, and there are others who can’t afford the time to take a week off, but I wanted to let people know that there’s likely to be another option soon. We’ve got a greenlight to run a two-day version of Launch Pad at DragonCon this coming Labor Day weekend. We’re finalizing some details now and when I have the press release done and it’s on the DragonCon website, I’ll let you all know. The model will be a bit different, and it isn’t going to be free (in part due to cuts at NASA taking away the funding I’d targeted), so it’ll likely be first-come, first-serve rather than the current application process. We’ll try to achieve a lot of the same goals. Should be fun and cool. I’ve wanted to go to DragonCon for years, and this is a great reason to finally do it.
On a personal note, I wanted to let people know that my wife Jean got her residency card (AKA greencard) in record time! We’ll be off to Cheyenne tomorrow to get her a social security number so she can get a job and stop going crazy stuck at home every day. We still have a lot more steps in the process of getting her set up here in Wyoming, but this is a huge one. She’ll also be able to take classes at the University without jumping through needless hoops required of international students. She’ll be coming to DragonCon, too, and loves costumes almost as much as me. Now we just have to get all her documents together with the same, accurate legal name for the TSA by then…
