Today’s Starlinks

Science fiction writers selling to the man–I mean–helping out Homeland Security.  Past the giggle factor, apparently…

Paul Levinson with strong concerns about Obama’s Supreme Court nominee.  I have some myself as I will nearly always pick individual liberty over the need to respect authority, especially when the authority is a douchebag.  I think she’ll be easily confirmed, however.  Read the article there — I’m not calling her a douchebag.  There are other justices who have earned that title, however.

Mary Rosenblum, a high-quality science fiction writer you should check out if you haven’t, is profiled for her sustainable lifestyle.  Interesting stuff, unless you’re squemish about raising bunnies for dinner.  My grandparents did.  We used to get letters with paragraphs starting, “We had Flopsy for dinner the other night…”

Are Today’s Kids Reading Enough Science Fiction? No, they are not.  My sales could be much stronger.

Gaming oriented website, Grinding to Valhalla, interviewing science fiction and fantasy authors. I’m in the queue for sometime in the near future.  Some good writers there on the list.

Astronomers learning more about accreting and spinning black holes. As usual, popular science story leaves something to be desired but I didn’t see outright mistakes or howlers.

Interview with David Williams on the release of his new novel, Burning Skies.  Looks interesting to me, near-future science and tech with some space stuff.

Interview with Kelly McCullough on the release of his new novel MythOS.  More computer-based science fantasy from Kelly.

Watchman parody for syndicated cartoonists, amusing.  Thanks, Russ.

If  Alvin Plantinga is really a well-regarded philosopher, I just have to say that philosophy is filled with idiots.  It’s dissapointing, and perhaps I’m biased, but pretty much every critic of science who isn’t a scientist seems clueless to me.  Worse than clueless.  Outright stupid.  Masters of B.S. who justify their own positions with nothing but crapola.  I’m sure this is not true of many individuals, but I am reminded of The Black Swan and the well-supported claim that there are many fields without experts.  I suspect philosophy is one of those.

Interesting sciencey blog I just discovered: http://www.weirdwarp.com/ Looks like good reading and informative.

I’ll second that comment about Plantinga. His “evolutionary argument against naturalism” is finest grade nonsense. The best thing I can say about him is that his arguments often employ a clever sophistical sleight of hand.

But when one is simply inventing rationalizations for articles of faith that’s probably the best that can be expected.
