I am not such a huge football fan in general, but I had the superbowl on tv while I was revising an astronomy paper I’m working on. One of the commercials really caught my eye: Google’s “Parisian Love.”
Normally ads on tv are visual. This one is text-based, and an example of how to tell a big story indirectly and quickly. It really highlighted Google and how it affects so much of our personal lives, too. Nice story-telling, nice ad. Reminded me of Earnest Hemingway’s famous six word short story: For sale. Baby shoes. Never Worn.

I am left with only one question.
WHy on EARTH would an oraganization whose very NAME has become an English word and a synonym for “search”… need an ad? is there anyone out there with the remotest eye on the modern world who hasn’t actually heard of Google? Or who won’t trip over the damned thing the moment they DO step into the cyberworld?
Why does Google need an ad? More specifically, why does Google need an ad during the Superbowl when ad space reputedly costs ten times a normal slot in any other piece of programming?
Why is Google throwing money away like this?
Admittedly it’s a good ad. But I completely fail to see the reason for its existence…

It seems to be branding, and stamping it in people’s heads forever and ever. I mean, McDonald’s, Coca Cola, Crest, and still billions spent on advertising.
What I really liked about the ad was showing how google works for a lot more than technical things, shopping things, etc. It helps make a complicated lovelife work, and that may help make people think to use it who never would have considered it before. Not everyone watching the superbowl uses the internet to help with their life in general.
