Sneak Preview of Life on Mars (videos)

October 3rd, 2008

There’s a new show starting on ABC next week (Thursday Oct. 9, at 10/9pm central) that I want to watch and I can’t because I’m in Brazil and I didn’t get my slingbox working before I left home. It’s called “Life on Mars” but it’s sort of a time travel thing rather than having anything to do with Mars.

Now, regular readers probably think I hate most time travel stories. And while I do hate many of them, a few are among my favorites. Ken Grimwood’s Replay is brilliant, as is Groundhog Day. This show promises to be a little like those. Described as Lost meets NYPD Blue, we have a police detective in New York who gets launched back into an alternative life in 1973:

Here’s a more detailed, longer intro:

Now, the best reason to watch the show, aside from the 1973 wocka-wocka music or the nostalgia about life before computers and the internet. Harvey Keitel as an old-school cop who doesn’t play by the rules. It’s sort of a cliche, but, hey, it’s the ur-cliche with Harvey Keitel!

Very promising…check it out.

It’s also a rip off of a UK TV series.

    Wasn’t too bad IMO

The UK series was quite good, even if the second season overplayed the IS IT REAL OR JUST A COMA DREAM angle. The dynamic between Gene Hunt and Sam Tyler was brilliant.

I was vaguely aware it was a remake of a UK series, but I’ve never seen the UK version. Presumably the UK version was set in London rather than New York?

but you aren’t anywhere near BBC America I gather from your post? If you have an opportunity to watch it in the future do so!

I”m loooking forward to catching the US version but even with Harvey Keitel I’m having my doubts. American TV just doesn’t seem to catch the nuances of the characters or storylines.

    Best wishes wherever you are.

    @ Mike

No it was set in Manchester. Same time period.

They did a sequel, Ashes to Ashes, about a female psychologist from the present day sent back to the early 1980s.
