There are strategies to succeed in science. Write a lot of simple, quick papers. Don’t gamble. Do conventional things. Be part of a team. A big team, with big names at the top.
These things don’t tend to advance the field too much, unfortunately.
We don’t see individual breakthroughs from young scientists too often anymore. The sociology is wrong. The problems are too big, or at least seem so.
Lee Smolin has an article about why we don’t have new Einsteins today. John Baez has some interesting comments on the topic.
Basically, it’s hard to figure out how to fund and give free rein to young smart hotshots and see if they pay off. I think there are plenty of problems left for individuals to figure out. But how can we as society give them the chance to do so?
