Lots of cool stuff, with a few awful things to shake your star scepter at, too…
Let’s start with one of the awful things that is actually really insightful and funny, depending on your perspective. A Catholic bishop has determined that education is responsible for the problems facing the church. Imagine that! He says:
“However, every human endeavor has a dark side, due to original sin and concupiscence. In the case of education, we can see its distortion through the widespread dissemination of radical scepticism, positivism, utilitarianism and relativism.
“Taken together, these intellectual trends have resulted in a fragmented society that marginalizes God, with many people mistakenly thinking they can live happy and productive lives without him.”
The horror! Education gives people the power to think for themselves, reach their own conclusions, and figure out how to lead happy and productive lives without the church, and the church thinks this is a problem. It is! For them…good riddance, organized authority-based religion.
Is Science Fiction Making you Stupid about Science? From io9, bonus quote from yours truly.
Really awesome interview, with some spoilers, about the forthcoming Watchmen movie.
75 Comics Being Made Into Movies. Whoa! That’s cool, but 75 good science fiction novels being made into movies would be even cooler.
Spiders in Space! And I’m not plugging Spider Star, although buying and reading it would be a sublime experience…
There was religion’s water into wine trick. Now NASA is turning urine into water. If science and religion could work together, imagine this: water into wine into urine into water into wine into urine into water…
Jo Walton at tor.com about Beyond America: the Future of the Rest of the Planet. Given my international travel recently, this is something I’ve been thinking a lot about.
New trailer for the upcoming Star Trek movie. I’m getting cautiously optimistic about this film. I think it will be at least more than an extended TV episode like the last several Trek movies.
BILLIONS of particles of anti-matter produced in the lab at Livermore. Mr. Scott would be so proud!
Science’s Alternative to the Intelligent Creator, the Multiverse Theory.
Finally, Can Everyone Be an Einstein? Personally, I’d say ‘no’ until I see the evidence from Hollywood, our government, and the internet. There’s plenty of dumb out there to erase…and we can start with that bishop who thinks that education and people thinking for themselves is a bad thing.
