I wanted to start out by pointing at James Wallace Harris’s great blog, that has really picked up over the holidays. He pays a lot of attention to science fiction, and my favorite recent post is about “Science fiction in my lifetime.”
New hope for science education under Obama. A new hope? Wasn’t that episode IV back in 1977? Carter didn’t pan out so well. Let’s hope Obama does better.
And an article about an innovative math program in Oregan that has 3rd graders doing algebra. Cool. Algebra really isn’t very hard. It is very intuitive and comes up in everyday life in a way that a lot of other math at a similar level rarely days (geometric proofs and trigonometry are useful in specialized situations but come up less often for most people).
Cop’s new non-lethal weaponry. 21st century tech, cool! Let’s just hope this doesn’t get abused. I mean, billy clubs are also non-lethal weaponry, old school, but still cause a lot of problems. Don’t taser me, bro!
Apparently job recruiters are being told to avoid hardcore gamers of the World of Warcraft variety. Why? Duh, if you’ve seen the Southpark episode about WoW and Cartman’s mom cleaning him up as he craps in his chair, still playing the game.
Looking toward New Year’s Resolutions, here’s an article about a website called stickk.com to economically motivate reaching your goals in a timely manner.
Apparently being a professor is a vastly overrated career choice. Ouch. I agree with some, but not all, of the points. Some are so dead-on it’s scary for me to read them because they bring up memories. But suggested alternatives like “University Librarian” don’t seem very appealing to me, I have to say.
Oh, and let’s wrap up with an article about some silly people convinced based on little more than their personal impression that wi-fi must be stopped due to its negative health effects. Do a study and show the effect! The ones that have been done find nothing. So, please, or be quiet. Sick of people believing things without any compelling evidence.
