We saw Star Trek the other day. Jeri liked it, but I didn’t. Not because it wasn’t “my old Star Trek” but because they tried to rehash and “improve” on the previous storyline when they gave themselves a blank canvass to tell new stories with. Talk about a wasted opportunity.

I’ve heard from a few Launchpad applicants that they never heard back from me. And the problem is, I didn’t see their applications, probably due to some technical snafu (spam filter? unknown glitch?). I’ll be putting out a call to the folks who applied but have not yet heard from me and we’ll figure out something, I hope, if only early admittance next year. Sigh. It’s always something.

The problem with meta-analysis does indeed suffer very much from the selection bias of which articles are published. I’m wary of any meta-analysis, unless it shows a huge effect and the authors demonstrate that even if there is big selection bias in the sample of studies that made it into publication the effect size would still be meaningful as well as significant.

Mike, I gave up on arguing with the people who keep dragging out the “pop culture” quip, because it’s like arguing with the young-earth creationists who keep reciting “it’s just a theory” over and over when presented with contrary evidence. Or any evidence at all, really. To steal from Harlan Ellison, it just wastes your time and annoys the pig.
