Errors in New Indiana Jones Movie

As reported here. Not science mistakes, which is my usual area, but apparently gross errors confusing Mexico and Peru, Mayans and Incas, and related issues of culture, language, and geography. I understand the average movie-goer won’t care, but I also think that consistently underestimating the public helps reinforce negative attitudes toward education. I mean, if these guys spending a hundred million dollars making a movie can’t bother to get things right, then why should anyone care?

I was a bit surprised by the inaccuracies regarding the magnetic qualities of the skull. Did anyone else find it odd that the magnetism was so “on-again-off-again”? It was inside a wooden crate in the warehouse at the beginning of the movie, but Indie was able to locate it using its “highly magnetic” qualities. But in more than one scene, the magnetism only begins working after it is uncovered, even though it is only in a burlap or canvas bag. That was the main thing I found truly inaccurate, but also pretty funny. And if I am not mistaken, Indie said that there were “some” men who spoke that language among Pancho Villa’s group. I do not recall him claiming that they ALL spoke it. There are always going to be errors in any movie, but that is the job of the person in charge of CONTINUITY to catch and correct. Maybe Spielberg should be more discriminating about who he hires for that job the next time. And as I recall, most of the movies George Lucas produces are written BY George Lucas, and obviously WHOEVER wrote the script failed to do much fact-checking about the details, which is unfortunate. However, if pointing out these inaccuracies incourages a few people to make the effort to find out the facts, that is a good thing.
